Metamorphic Rocks

Metamorphic Rocks are rocks that were once sedimentary or igneous rock but have changed to another under the influence of heat, pressure, or some other agent without passing through a liquid phase.

This picture is of the metamorphic rock slate. Slate is created from the sedimentary rock mudstone.

This picture is of the metamorphic rock marble. Marble is created from the sedimentary rock limestone.

Metamorphic rocks have been changed over time by extreme pressure and heat. These rocks were previously sedimentary or igneous rocks.  Metamorphic rocks can be formed by pressure deep under the Earth's surface, from the extreme heat caused by magma or by the intense collisions and friction of tectonic plates. Two types of metamorphic rocks are slate and marble.
